DELIVERING TRANSPORTATION DOLLARS FOR OUR COMMUNITIES

  • Help secure funding for the purple line - DONE
  • Start the construction of the Purple Line at New Carrollton rather than Bethesda - DONE
  • Ensure the line is affordable for residents who will rely on it for access to jobs and educational opportunities - Worked on COMPACT
  • Protect small businesses during the construction phase of the line so that they are able to stay in business and keep their doors open - Worked on COMPACT
  • Ensure that the 2nd District receives the road construction and rehabilitation funding it deserves - ONGOING
  • Maintain and expand currents levels of bus service to our neighborhoods and mass transit stations

ADVOCATING FOR EDUCATIONAL EQUITY

  • Work to remove temporary classrooms by exploring a bond program similar to Baltimore City to fund school construction and renovation within Prince George’s County - Assured that we have 4 new schools in the Pipeline
  • Expand pre-K programs for working families - Working on bringing Centro Nia into Prince George's County
  • Advocate for more specialized school options - ONGOING
  • Support programs that have been documented to help close the achievement gap - Helped fund MANUP as well as other educational programs
  • Work with the school board and parents to increase parental involvement - My staff and I have been a visible presence at the Back to School Nights as well as the PTA/PTO meetings throughout the district
  • Advocate for building new schools in the district and investing in renovating schools that are not in acceptable condition, such as High Point High School and Thomas Stone Elementary School - There are now 4 new schools in the pipeline for 1 Middle School, 1 International High School, 1 Elementary School, and 1 New High School all in or for District 2 students; Hyattsville Elementary and Middle Schools slated for redevelopment and/or renovation

DRIVING LOCAL ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT EFFORTS

  • Support policies and budget decisions that create good paying jobs in the County - DONE see Jobs First Bill
  • Grow the tax base through new development and through the redevelopment of our existing commercial properties - ONGOING
  • Create more minority business opportunities - DONE
  • Ensure the success of development projects around Prince George’s Plaza and West Hyattsville Metro Stations - DONE
  • Support the growth of the Gateway Arts District - DONE

STRENGTHENING HOUSING STANDARDS AND CODE ENFORCEMENT

  • Work closely with County agencies to address blight issues and stabilize property values in neighborhoods hit hard during the 2008 housing crisis and the great recession - ONGOING
  • Respond quickly and thoroughly to constituent concerns on landscaping, bulk trash disposal, parking, overcrowded housing, and permitting code violations- ONGOING see legislation under Achievements
  • Ensure that a proportional amount of affordable housing is available for working families and seniors - DONE See affordable housing bill and senior housing bill and projects

ADVOCATING FOR A BETTER, CLEANER ENVIRONMENT

  • Preserve and upkeep our green spaces - DONE
  • Where feasible, build bicycle lanes and walking paths - ONGOING working on getting the Trolley Trail completed
  • Support smart growth development at our Metro Stations - DONE and ONGOING
  • Reduce pollution runoff in order to protect the Chesapeake Bay - DONE see legislation under Achievements

PROVING RESOURCES FOR BETTER PUBLIC SAFETY

  • Ensure that our firefighters and police have the resources they need to do their jobs well - DONE
  • Promote and support programs that, reduce substance abuse and domestic violence in our community, improve our residents' mental health, and help prisoners re-enter society - DONE and ONGOING
  • Invest in gang prevention and intervention programs as well as after schools programs for all youths - DONE and ONGOING
